DSA 2023 Song Contest Awards - Grand prize Judge Comments by Roy Elkins

Another round of thanks to the Dallas Songwriters Association for tolerating my presence each year. It's like my annual pass to the coolest musical club in town. This gig gives me the chance to dive into a sea of songs and play the reviewer extraordinaire.
Hats off to all the songwriters—I'm consistently blown away by the sheer quality and artistry poured into these tunes. When I dive into reviewing these songs, it's a rollercoaster ride—I get chills, bust out in smiles, burst into laughter, sometimes even shed a tear or get riled up. That's the magic of a song. It stirs something inside us, something raw and untamed. So, to all the writers out there, thank you for weaving that enchantment.
Now, brace yourselves—I've made a revolutionary move this year. Normally, my reviews come with a sprinkle of spelling and grammar blunders. I'm no walking dictionary, after all. But this time, I thought, why not let the robots take a shot? So, I called upon the AI powers to interpret my thoughts. Instead of my usual "there were strong lyrics in this song," the AI spits out sophisticated gems like "There's considerable strength in the lyrics of this song" or "Some of the lyrics in this song hold significant power and depth."
It took a bit more time than usual—I had to ensure those smart machines got my vibe right. But fear not, I meticulously checked each review. The goal? To make sure the machines didn't turn me into a fancy-word-spewing robot but helped me finesse my thoughts. Mission accomplished, and I've gained some AI insight along the way. Turns out, they're not half bad, but it took a little longer than usual.

The Top 5 this year are:
1. Fade Away
2. Country USA
3. Safety Net
4. Nothing To Do With You
5. Close Enough
Reviews are below.

Fade Away
The opening line alone draws you in, making you crave the entire song. It's not just the incredible phrasing; it's a simple yet universally relatable lyric. The way the lyric blends seamlessly with the melody makes this song truly remarkable and effortlessly engaging from start to finish.
The chorus hits, and it's a Wow moment. When a songwriter poses a question within the chorus, it has the potential to be truly magical. Think of songs like Marvin’s "What's Going On," "What's Love Got To Do With It" by Tina and "Where Have You Been" by Rihanna—those questions resonate because we've all pondered them. It's a technique that keeps the listener connected and the song relevant, fostering continuous engagement.
It brought to mind Billie Eilish's track "Lovely" with Khalid. It shares a similar lyrical vibe, albeit with a touch more speed in its tempo. This song could seamlessly fit into Billie Eilish's repertoire too.
This song is impeccably crafted—I could rave about it endlessly. Ultimately, while the theme isn't groundbreaking (it's about a girl who likes a boy but isn't entirely certain, yet her feelings persist), the execution of the lyric and the melody is what makes it stand out.
A shoutout to the entire production team—fantastic work all around. This track is primed for the big leagues: top-notch production, strong vocals, smart sound choices, and impeccable arrangements. It's the kind of quality that I'd eagerly sign to my publishing company without hesitation.
I would love to hear more songs from this writer.

Country USA
A listener could easily visualize a bunch of folks gathered on a porch, strumming this tune. The singer wanders through childhood memories, swathed in nostalgia, while still feeling alone. The melody is very singable for just about anyone who can carry the slightest bit of a note. The hook mixes the melody up a little, but again delivered perfectly and the closing line is definitive.
Similar to some other entries in the competition, these lyrics are wonderfully simple yet effective. It's a challenge to use familiar rhymes in a fresh way, and the writer(s) managed just that. Lines like "do our chores" and "beeline for the door" is just one example.
Anticipating a rhyme between "I have so many things" and "but I dream" was not expected. I thought the line would rhyme with the word “away” from the previous one. Yet, it set up the hook in the subsequent line, beautifully. Whether intentional or instinctive, it stood out as a clever choice.
Familiar expressions like "take me home" and "I feel so alone" are employed here, nothing groundbreaking in the world of songwriting. Yet, the key lesson remains: uniqueness isn't always crucial if the execution is effective, as evidenced here. [One small observation on production: the delivery of "feel so alone" almost conjures up the image of John and Paul singing together, a pleasant touch that brought a smile to my face.]
There's little to fault in this song. While it may not fit snugly atop the pop charts, it easily finds a home in the repertoires of folk-country or bluegrass artists. It's

Safety Net
The song opens uniquely with the singer stating, "I got questions," followed by the melodic delivery of "Piling them up from the floor to the ceiling" in a captivating staccato rhythm, leaving the listener eager for more. The verses boast an exceptional and distinctive melody, setting them apart from typical compositions.
This piece stands out among recent releases, showcasing a level of creativity that's truly refreshing. The musical progression accompanying the vocals carries shades of jazz pop, reminiscent of styles one might expect from a Spinners track.
The chorus holds immense potential to become the song's defining moment. The line "All I know" is sung like an anthem, seamlessly reintroducing the listener to the core of the song's message.
The song's use of metaphors like "Safety Net," "Tight Rope," "Dive in Deep," "Losing my balance," and "Piling them up" offers a fresh and original perspective on love, making the exploration of this theme intriguing and novel.
In summary, "Safety Net" shines as one of the standout entries in its competition, fearlessly delving into themes of vulnerability, fears, and reliance. Its emotional sincerity and relatability, coupled with its innovative approach to expressing the nuances of love, make it a compelling and memorable composition.

Nothing To Do With You
The concept of "doing nothing with you" is truly endearing and resonates deeply. Initially, I pondered whether it should be phrased "I'd love to do nothing with you." I thought it might enhance the sentiment, but after picking up my guitar and further repetition, I realize the writers likely explored multiple paths to arrive at this hook.
The bridge stands out as exceptionally strong, seamlessly complementing the verses. It's a testament to how well-crafted it is within the song's framework.
Usually, I don't lean towards overly literal lyrics, such as "I ask if you want to go out, You say you'd rather stay at home," which are quite direct. Yet, the beauty lies in the simplicity—the melody and straightforward words work seamlessly. The song's simplicity, from its progression to its lyrics, welcomes universal sing-alongs, maintaining a predictable yet engaging structure. Despite this simplicity, the hook's excellence and the overall originality are some of the best I’ve heard in this group of songs.
The combination of simplicity and originality is the key highlight that makes it immensely effective.
Production-wise, this demo stands strong, displaying remarkable quality. Yet, envisioning a seasoned band with extensive chemistry taking on this track piques curiosity. The current rendition feels expertly crafted by studio professionals, possibly altering the key to suit the vocalist's range—a sensible choice. This potential breakout single holds promise within the country genre, open to interpretation by a multitude of male country singers. Overall, it's a fantastic piece of work demonstrating excellence in every aspect.

Close Enough
I don’t usually do this during reviews, but every so often, something sparks me to grab my guitar and play along with a song I'm evaluating. That happened with “Close Enough.” Among all the tracks on the list, I found myself drawn to this one the most—it's been a mix of love and struggle. The lyrics resonate, painting a vivid blues ballad when read alone, while the melody, when isolated in my head from the lyric, sings a radiant pop-country tune. I even tried lyrics in a blues pattern on the guitar and found myself pretending to be Howlin’ Wolf. It’s the tension between the lyrics and the melody that challenges me when experiencing the song in its entirety. Both elements shine on their own, making it a good song as it stands.
That said, I genuinely think there's potential for two outstanding songs within this one. I'd be thrilled to see this writer deliver a compelling blues ballad and an engaging pop-country track—I believe he/she has the capability to excel in both directions with this song. If you're reading this, just grab your guitar and infuse these lyrics with sass over any blues progression; you'll understand what I'm getting at. Some will find themselves slipping into Sarah Vaughn or Billie Holiday mode in no time. Others will Howl like Chester. I'm excited to hear more from this songwriter and I hope they keep venturing into new territories, pushing their own limits. Fantastic job!
Because the lyrics delve into themes of failure, while the melody is decidedly upbeat, it’s a paradox in the best form. I still like the tune as is, but have a hard time with this paradox.

I Fall Apart
This is a song where the singer could hum it and you would know it’s about pain and anguish. If Patsy Cline were still alive, I Fall Apart would be the perfect song for her as it is an emotive portrayal of heartbreak similar to the great Harlan Howard and Hank Cochran tune that she made famous.
From the first bars, I sensed its potential as a finalist—the melody, lyrics, hook, and authenticity align perfectly with each other and the title of the song. Starting with a captivating steel guitar over a familiar progression, each verse delves deeper into agony, weaving a melodic & lyrical narrative that feels genuinely raw and connected.
It's easy to imagine vocalists like Lainey Wilson or Kacey Musgraves interpreting this track. However, the lyrics may not align with today's usual country style. Nevertheless, the delivery of this rendition (especially the melody) is of such high quality that it's hard to imagine an artist surpassing this level of excellence.
Despite not being my usual preference, the song's skilled craftsmanship is undeniable. This song is polished and deserves its place in the limelight just as it is. Great job!
Production-wise, while I never factor it into my song evaluations, the sheer brilliance of a singer nailing a melody like this makes it challenging to disregard the impact of such remarkable production quality. Kudos to everyone involved in this track. It is ready for radio as is.

Look Away
This solo vocal introduction immediately draws the listener into the storyline with captivating engagement—a tasteful and well-executed choice. The line "You're just another dead end on this dead end road" resonates universally, making it relatable to almost any audience member.
The strategic structure and thoughtful pauses within the track serve to elevate its impact, allowing the hook to firmly establish the song's theme right from the opening line. It encapsulates the journey of breaking free from a stifling relationship, as highlighted by the repeated plea to "look away from me."
The singer's acknowledgment in the final stanza of being unable to bear witnessing further pain while choosing personal well-being over professed is a nice twist.
This lyric effectively portrays resilience and self-preservation, skillfully supported by a progression and arrangement that complement the singer's emotional journey. The subtlety in the track's melody enhances rather than distracts from the storytelling, contributing to its impactful delivery.
Great work on this. I would love to hear more from these writer(s).

My Beautiful Mistake
The song is about the complexities of unintentional love, presenting a fresh perspective on a old theme. "My Beautiful Mistake" is an intriguing title that encapsulates the emotional journey explored within the lyric. The structure and thematic depth are very strong, offering a unique take on a familiar subject.
The melody complements the sentiment of the words, enhancing the somber message conveyed by the lyric. It creates a solemn vibe above and beyond the lyric.
The song's progression carries a nostalgic essence, almost reminiscent of classic pop standards, adding a compelling layer to its musicality.
However, despite its strengths, there's a hint that the lyrical simplicity might limit the concept's full impact. Re-writing a few of the commonly used lyrics with inventive ways to convey the same emotions could elevate the song. Also, while the bridge drawing a parallel with Columbus is a clever touch, it feels slightly disconnected from the central sentiment of the song's hook.
Production note: The song features a stunning melody delivered by an equally captivating voice.. My guess is she might be the writer of the song or she is a very good session singer who can deliver the feeling the writer intended.  Congrats to everyone on this very tasteful production.

Santa Claus Got Lost
Join in for the most chaotic holiday ride set to music! "Santa Claus Got Lost While on a Sleigh Ride" reads like a storyline straight from a festive disaster movie. Admittedly, my first impression of this tune wasn't too enthusiastic, but with each replay, it somehow grew on me.
The chorus is relentlessly catchy, echoing with "MERRY CHRISTMAS, MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR, HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR, MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR TOO, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU." It's the sort of refrain that embeds itself in your thoughts, looping like the "Pina Colada" song—sometimes sticking around longer than expected, despite the wish for it to fade, yet secretly really liking it.
The bridge is an absolute gem, "Sprinkle Fairy Pixie Dust… Starts Rising Up," offering a memorable interlude that's hard to resist.
The flawless delivery impeccably complements the melody, resulting in a seamless marriage of music and lyrics.
There's very little to fault in this song. While it might not clinch the competition, its craftsmanship is evident, a testament to the talents of the writers behind it. With the right well-known singer, it has the potential to become a holiday sing-along staple, post a round of holiday cheers, of course.
Regarding production, I've heard this demo singer's voice over the years, and her melodic interpretations are top-notch. Kudos to the entire production team for their hard work.
Here's to wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Cheers to the festivities!

Like This (A Dancing Song)
Like This (A Dancing Song)" is a charming children's tune that cleverly merges the fun of dancing with the importance of tidying up. Its core message about responsibility and post-playtime cleanliness is delivered in a playful and captivating manner. The catchy rhythm and mnemonic quality encourage kids to groove while they tidy their space—a clever and engaging way to blend chores with enjoyment.
Listening to this song sparks the thought that the writer must be seasoned in creating children's content, perhaps having performed for many young audiences. It's easy to envision a group of kids enthusiastically dancing along as the artist sings this tune. The relatability and connection it fosters with its audience are evident.
Great work on this.

Song For George
This instrumental piece is a stunning showcase of the piano, embracing a melody that exudes profound passion. Around the 42-second mark, the chorus blooms with captivating beauty, accentuated by a delightful chord progression at 56 seconds and elegantly resolving at 1:17. The introduction of keyboard strings further enriches the enchanting essence of this composition, weaving seamlessly into its beauty.
A notable turnaround at 2:16 sets the stage for the subsequent verse, introducing a shift that adds depth to the musical journey. While the synth strings contribute to the piece, a personal preference might lean towards updating them to a quartet or perhaps integrating a subtle B3 organ to enhance the overall mix and add a contemporary touch.
The piece culminates in a breathtaking conclusion from 3:25 to 3:57, displaying a masterful grasp of composition and performance. The piano player deserves commendation for skillfully bringing this piece to life with their exceptional talent.
This composition possesses the qualities that could easily find a place on the shelves of instrument stores among sheet music collections. Its beautiful melody, perfect duration, and performer-friendly nature make it a well-crafted gem, ripe for interpretation and performance.
The title left me pondering: Who could this George be? Harrison, Gershwin, or maybe Winston? In this performance, there are subtle echoes reminiscent of Winston's artistry, reflecting a similar finesse and skill.
Continued Alphabetically

Amarillo Blues
An appealing opening riff that echoes throughout the entire song. The driving rhythm creates an energetic blues vibe, and the skilled musicians shine in their performance. At around 1:30, the wah/quack tone adds a cool dimension, followed by the harmonica making it’s entrance at 1:55, though I was hoping it would take a more prominent role and take verse with the melody.
The guitar and harmonica, despite their standout moments, dominated the mix, making it hard to fully appreciate the rest of the arrangement & structural components of the piece. If this were my track, I'd suggest a remix, perhaps experimenting with expanding on the excellent opening motif to maintain listener interest. While production isn't considered in a songwriting competition, enhancing melodies and hooks with a solid production, good mix and arrangements is crucial to success for an instrumental, especially a blues piece. It could significantly alter how the audience perceives the overall track. I love the opening melody, but the arrangement fluttered after about 30 seconds, mainly because of the mix.

Bayou Self
An amazing hook that's incredibly vivid and descriptive, boasting an exceptional concept. The hook's strength begs for an even more robust melody. Impressive lyrics and word rhythm; the more I heard it, the more I valued it.
I think this song has been in the contest for three years now, and this time around, I rated it slightly higher. I've always admired it and believe it's masterfully crafted by a talented songwriter. It keeps gaining depth with every listen.
Regarding the arrangement and as mentioned in previous years, it felt a bit cramped. However, it succeeded in capturing the regional essence intended by the lyrics.

Behind A Wall
Fascinating concept for a song that holds deeper meaning beyond its lyrics, which I always find intriguing. The song's subject navigates a life fraught with challenges, eventually feeling trapped in the world they've built, yearning to overcome their current barriers. Interestingly, the resolution involves aiding a stranger facing similar struggles.
The melody at 33 seconds and throughout is truly exceptional—fantastic work that delivers the most compelling melodic hook in the song. The harmonies certainly didn’t either. They were excellent.
Although "Wide As An Ocean Mountain Tall" feels a bit contrived in the first verse, I do believe the simplicity of all of the lyrics are what makes this song work with the melody.  In a way it’s a little early Beatles in it’s simplicity, but a little later Beatles in it’s depth.
Although the melody in the verses might seem somewhat repetitive, it oddly suits the essence of this particular piece. Impressive work from a thought provoking writer.
a fine piece crafted by a skilled songwriter(s).

Dallas
The song captures the essence of a lost love right from the first line: "I wrote the songs........ink I used was tears." It follows a solid ABAB structure, punctuated by a brief bridge towards the finale. The lyrics oscillate between tales of lost love and snapshots of the cities where the singer performs.
The hook kicks off with a punch: "I’m singing my heart out in Dallas tonight." It sets a powerful tone, drawing the listener deeper into the emotional landscape the singer paints throughout the song.
While taking in this tune, a constant notion emerged—I couldn't help but picture the singer commanding a live audience. There's a distinct charisma and presence that feel custom-fit for live performances. My bet is she's not just the performer but also the talented mind behind the songwriting.
Were it my track, I'd consider revising the bridge's lyrics. They seem somewhat disjointed from the rest of the song, potentially creating a disconnect for the listener.  I'd also consider a gradual intensification in delivering the chorus across the song. Perhaps keeping the melody a touch more subdued in the initial chorus and allowing the raw emotion to shine through in the final rendition.
Overall, a good song and I would love to see the song performed by this singer in a live setting.

The Door To Your Dreams
The song opens with the gentle chime of dreaming bells, creating a whimsical atmosphere that captures the essence of imagination. The choice of sounds resonates beautifully, setting the stage for a tender and comforting experience.
As the melody unfolds, a soft chorus envelops the listener, painting a heartwarming picture of a parent serenading their child. It's a moment of tender connection, where the lyrics echo the sentiment of reassurance: "There's nothing to fear when there's love all around." It's a powerful and comforting message to impart to a child, emphasizing the warmth and safety found in love's embrace.
The song culminates with the delicate fading of the childlike bell, perhaps symbolizing the gentle transition from the lullaby's world of dreams back to the quiet reality of slumber. This thoughtful conclusion adds an evocative touch, leaving a lasting impression of comfort and tranquility.
This lullaby is truly wonderful and I'd wholeheartedly suggest every parent sings it to their children regularly. In a world that could use a bit more love, nurturing and sharing such heartfelt moments can make all the difference.

Everything
The song kicks off with an impressive guitar riff that resonates throughout. It channels the spirit of a brilliant British pop-rock piece from the mid-eighties, yet subtly bridges that era with a modern touch.
Lyrically, the song maintains a high standard from start to finish. However, while the chorus stands out as one of the competition's finest, there's a bit of uncertainty regarding the connection between the verses and this powerful chorus from the listener's perspective. Reading through the verses, one might feel a bit adrift in deciphering their significance, but the standout chorus shines brightly amidst this complexity.
I’d love to hear more from this writer. Good work! On a production note, kudos to the producer!

Forever Drive
This track explores a writer's quest to break free from their past life—a compelling theme carried by a powerful set of lyrics. While the lyrics shine with excellence, it seems they're yearning for a complementary melody. The chorus manages to uplift and convey the lyrics effectively, yet I believe the verse lyrics could truly flourish with a melody that matches their strength. The hook and chorus, nevertheless, stand out as excellent.
On the whole, I'm fond of the song, but I believe refining the melody in the verses could elevate it from good to exceptional.
That being said, my perspective might entirely shift with more listens of this song. Among all the entries in the competition, this one has progressively grown on me with each playthrough.
Hope this feedback proves helpful!

Hey Little Hero
"Little Hero" celebrates everyday champions through its endearing repetition and vibrant imagery, lauding inner strength and inviting listeners on a creative journey. The song's bold title kick-starts a tasteful climb in both instrumental and vocal form, at 40 seconds and 1:28, leaving a lasting impression. While seemingly tailored for children, its intricate melody and lyrics might surpass their comprehension. Nonetheless, it exudes a lively celebration of heroism, praising bravery and playfully engaging everyone in the hero's tale. The infusion of "Yatta!" adds zest to the cheerful vibe. Overall, it's a commendable song. If it were mine, I might refine the melody's phrasing, which feels a tad contrived, albeit in line with the target audience.

I’d Be A Fool

"I'd Be a Fool" beautifully explores faith, creation, and the miracle of life, highlighting the profound parent-child connection and the beauty of believing in something greater. While the melody, hook, chorus and structure follow a familiar pattern, the song's uniqueness lies in its exceptional concept and originality. Ultimately, what truly counts is the writer's sincere expression of their own truth and beliefs, transcending any conventional song competition. Congrats!

Life Is Hard
"Life Is Hard" embodies the essence of traditional blues, offering a unique narrative that delves into the silent struggles of iconic figures. The song skillfully portrays the inner thoughts and desires of Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, and David, providing a fresh perspective on the challenges encountered by these legendary symbols of art and history.
This original composition stands out for its vivid imagery, painting a clear picture of the frustrations faced by these renowned personas. While the chorus, centered around the phrase "Life Is Hard," eventually becomes memorable, it might take a few listens to fully connect its significance to the historical context woven throughout the verses.
Overall, "Life Is Hard" is a cleverly crafted piece with strong imagery that evokes a sense of empathy and perhaps even a smile as it sheds light on the untold struggles of these iconic figures.
Lonesome Is As Lonesome Does
A pleasant song to listen to, the track dives into the realm of lost love and the fervent pursuit to reignite its flame. Its verses and choruses resonate with raw emotion, painting a vivid story of heartbreak, resilience, and the ceaseless quest for comfort in the haunting echoes of solitude.
The melody remains straightforward and unembellished, lacking in intricate dynamics. It evokes shades of Seals and Crofts or Christopher Cross, with its straight-ahead Folk-Rock progressions. The song is anchored by a poignant lyrical hook that delivers a strong emotional punch.
The lyrical potency seems a bit disconnected from the melody when sung or hummed. If it were my composition, I'd consider infusing a touch of melancholy into the melody, particularly within the hook, to better echo the emotional depth conveyed by the lyrics.

The Media’s At War
Casually listening to this track might obscure its true essence—a rock protest song with a unique twist. The song "The Media's At War" echoes a sentiment of nostalgia for a different era, contrasting the portrayal of heroes and villains in today's media landscape. This uniquely original lyric challenges the media's depiction of Christianity. The melody harmonizes well with the lyrics, particularly in the chorus, forming a strong melodic hook which echoes the title. The progression and arrangement resonate with the spirit of a 70s rock anthem. I have always admired songs of faith that venture beyond conventional praise lyrics. When a songwriter reaches into exploring their beliefs about right and wrong in the world, it's something I truly respect.

Other Side of the Wind
This faith-driven tune is a standout, boasting a distinctive and authentic vibe. Its lyrics effortlessly interlace religious anecdotes with modern-day parallels, painting a vivid picture of faith, skepticism, redemption, and the complexities of humanity.
The song carries a powerful, straightforward melody that invites virtually anyone to join in, paired with an irresistible, energizing arrangement. With its well-defined structure, commendable originality, and a strong sense of truth, it's a compelling musical narrative.
One line that particularly resonates is "When I was in school, math was a bore (no doubt) but 3 nails and a cross equals forgiveness evermore.” This blend of insight and humor encapsulates profound themes, delivered with both wit and sincerity, making a lasting impact on the listener.
Great work!

Pick Up Those Pieces
This song presents an upbeat melody contrasting with a lyric revolving around piecing together a broken heart. The singer adds a touch of gentle melancholy to the upbeat tune, creating a subtle connection between the melody and the heartbroken sentiment.
The song follows a straightforward pop structure, offering a direct, catchy tune that adheres to familiar conventions. Like I mentioned, the singer does a good job of generating a heartbroken feel to the melody.
The verses traverse a predictable path, describing lost love with phrases like "the sky went grey when I knew you had gone away" and "sometimes it seems like all the stars shine just for you." It’s very difficult for a singer to deliver emotional resonance from well-trodden clichés.
In terms of production, the song carries a distinct 1980s vibe. However, to make it more relevant for contemporary audiences, a reimagining in terms of production style and a revamp of the lyrical content for added depth might be beneficial. Nevertheless, the nostalgic feel of the current production could find a niche in shows or settings harkening back to the 1980s.

Summer Daze
In the initial few seconds, there's a fleeting resemblance to a Coldplay tune, with hints of Gary Moore's tasteful guitar work entwined within the piano melody.
Following the serene opening, a gradual walk introduced around 18 seconds circles back at 26 seconds, concluding the initial segment with a soothingly familiar cadence. However, a change occurs at 35 seconds—the bass adopts the stroll, offering rhythmic "footsteps."
At approximately the 50-second mark, the graceful dialogue between the guitar and piano returns, threading through the piece with a sequence of tasteful licks. It's reminiscent of an impromptu jam session, capturing the players' experimentation against the rhythmic canvas of programmed drums.
The piece exudes tastefulness, making it effortlessly enjoyable. However, if it were mine, I'd explore incorporating a skilled jazz drummer to interpret and elevate the themes established by the piano and guitar. Emphasizing the "footsteps" motif could further amplify the piece's thematic depth.
With its immersive quality, this song has the power to transport the listener into a realm where the mind wanders.
Good players, congrats on this.

Until You Become Mine
This song kicks off with a tasteful piano intro that sets a reflective tone. The initial vocals hint at echoes of Dionne Warwick, adding a nostalgic touch to the delivery.
Around the 44-second mark, the vocals begin to crescendo, complemented by the swelling prominence of backing strings, adding depth and emotion to the track. Throughout the song, there's a delicate balance of dynamics, maintaining the essence of a heartfelt piano ballad.
The composition exudes a Broadway-worthy vibe, making it feel like a seamless fit for a theatrical production. Overall, "Until You Become Mine" captures the essence of unrequited love, weaving a story that resonates with the yearning and emotional struggles familiar to many. The hauntingly repetitive chorus encapsulates the enduring longing for a love that remains just out of reach.

We Say I Love You
The story unravels in a tug-of-war between the two vocalists, expressing their tangled emotions. It explores the significance of spoken words, their profound effect on emotions, and the delicate interplay between longing and hesitation in romantic connections.
Despite the song's recurring hook of "I Love You," a phrase that feels somewhat overused, it's delivered with a twist—first by the male, then the female, and finally together in unison, forming the song's title. While lacking in complete originality, this approach maintains a pleasant and tasteful essence, effectively conveying heartfelt sentiments. Its relatability ensures that every listener finds a personal connection within the song's depth of emotion.

When You Were Loving Me
This song is a poignant narrative of longing and nostalgia. The verses vividly paint a picture of fading colors, weeping willow trees, and the rhythm of rain nostalgically recalls a time of love and warmth. The chorus serves as a heartfelt plea and yearns to reverse the course of events that led to the current state of longing.
A favorite lyric is, “And if I could turn back the pages of time, I’d turn back to when you were loving me.” A good marriage of melody and lyric, supported by a traditional folk progression.
I couldn't shake the feeling during each chorus that the syllables were slightly stretched. Perhaps a small uptick of 4 to 8 beats per minute could lend some momentum. However, pushing the tempo too far might risk altering the essence and vibe of the song.
Overall, the lyrics beautifully encapsulate the essence of yearning for lost love and the longing to turn back time to a period filled with affection. The imagery and emotive language create a vivid and relatable narrative, resonating with anyone who has experienced the ache of a love lost.

Wonderland
The lyrics for "Wonderland" paint a vivid picture of internal struggles and finding solace within oneself. The verses delve into the complexities and insecurities that plague the mind, showcasing the internal conflicts and unspoken thoughts.
The chorus acts as an anthem of empowerment, defining this space as a personal "wonderland" where the impossible becomes possible. It's a plea for guidance and assistance in navigating this intricate mental landscape.
From a musical standpoint, the song follows a repetitive loop that persists from start to finish. While the lyrics provoke thought, the music doesn't seem to encapsulate that essence effectively. The current could benefit from evolving and aligning more dynamically with the lyrical depth. Maintaining the same chord & loop structure would work, but injecting some fluctuation—moments of both intensity and subtlety—would enhance it’s the lyrical content as well.
Overall, the song beautifully captures the idea of a personal sanctuary, a place of both struggle and resilience, where one seeks understanding and support while embracing the chaos within.

You’re A Halo
This song is a testament to skilled craftsmanship, evidently penned by someone well-versed in songwriting. The synergy between the lyrics, melody, and progression is seamless, a meticulously crafted piece rather than one born from inspiration.
The hook, "You’re a Halo Shining On Me," stands out as exceptional and possibly the most distinctive in the competition.
Upon hearing the verses, I anticipated an Eric Carmen-esque build towards a grand chorus. Yet, when the chorus hit, I sensed shades of Meatloaf without pinpointing the exact melody. Then it struck me—echoes of "Total Eclipse of the Heart." The influences on the writer(s) are palpable throughout the song.
If it were mine, I'd introduce a moment for the listener to catch their breath between the verse and chorus—a natural pause that an artist or producer picking it up might also consider.
This track holds tremendous crossover potential and, in the hands of the right artist, could illuminate the Pop-Christian market.
Good work to everyone involved.
