Similar to some other entries in the competition, these lyrics are wonderfully simple yet effective. It's a challenge to use familiar rhymes in a fresh way, and the writer(s) managed just that. Lines like "do our chores" and "beeline for the door" is just one example.
Anticipating a rhyme between "I have so many things" and "but I dream" was not expected. I thought the line would rhyme with the word “away” from the previous one. Yet, it set up the hook in the subsequent line, beautifully. Whether intentional or instinctive, it stood out as a clever choice.

I don’t usually do this during reviews, but every so often, something sparks me to grab my guitar and play along with a song I'm evaluating. That happened with “Close Enough.” Among all the tracks on the list, I found myself drawn to this one the most—it's been a mix of love and struggle. The lyrics resonate, painting a vivid blues ballad when read alone, while the melody, when isolated in my head from the lyric, sings a radiant pop-country tune. I even tried lyrics in a blues pattern on the guitar and found myself pretending to be Howlin’ Wolf. It’s the tension between the lyrics and the melody that challenges me when experiencing the song in its entirety. Both elements shine on their own, making it a good song as it stands.
That said, I genuinely think there's potential for two outstanding songs within this one. I'd be thrilled to see this writer deliver a compelling blues ballad and an engaging pop-country track—I believe he/she has the capability to excel in both directions with this song. If you're reading this, just grab your guitar and infuse these lyrics with sass over any blues progression; you'll understand what I'm getting at. Some will find themselves slipping into Sarah Vaughn or Billie Holiday mode in no time. Others will Howl like Chester. I'm excited to hear more from this songwriter and I hope they keep venturing into new territories, pushing their own limits. Fantastic job!
Because the lyrics delve into themes of failure, while the melody is decidedly upbeat, it’s a paradox in the best form. I still like the tune as is, but have a hard time with this paradox.

This is a song where the singer could hum it and you would know it’s about pain and anguish. If Patsy Cline were still alive, I Fall Apart would be the perfect song for her as it is an emotive portrayal of heartbreak similar to the great Harlan Howard and Hank Cochran tune that she made famous.
From the first bars, I sensed its potential as a finalist—the melody, lyrics, hook, and authenticity align perfectly with each other and the title of the song. Starting with a captivating steel guitar over a familiar progression, each verse delves deeper into agony, weaving a melodic & lyrical narrative that feels genuinely raw and connected.
It's easy to imagine vocalists like Lainey Wilson or Kacey Musgraves interpreting this track. However, the lyrics may not align with today's usual country style. Nevertheless, the delivery of this rendition (especially the melody) is of such high quality that it's hard to imagine an artist surpassing this level of excellence.
Despite not being my usual preference, the song's skilled craftsmanship is undeniable. This song is polished and deserves its place in the limelight just as it is. Great job!
Production-wise, while I never factor it into my song evaluations, the sheer brilliance of a singer nailing a melody like this makes it challenging to disregard the impact of such remarkable production quality. Kudos to everyone involved in this track. It is ready for radio as is.

Also, while the bridge drawing a parallel with Columbus is a clever touch, it feels slightly disconnected from the central sentiment of the song's hook.
Production note: The song features a stunning melody delivered by an equally captivating voice.. My guess is she might be the writer of the song or she is a very good session singer who can deliver the feeling the writer intended. Congrats to everyone on this very tasteful production.
Santa Claus Got Lost
Join in for the most chaotic holiday ride set to music! "Santa Claus Got Lost While on a Sleigh Ride" reads like a storyline straight from a festive disaster movie. Admittedly, my first impression of this tune wasn't too enthusiastic, but with each replay, it somehow grew on me.
The chorus is relentlessly catchy, echoing with "MERRY CHRISTMAS, MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR, HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR, MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR TOO, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU." It's the sort of refrain that embeds itself in your thoughts, looping like the "Pina Colada" song—sometimes sticking around longer than expected, despite the wish for it to fade, yet secretly really liking it.
The bridge is an absolute gem, "Sprinkle Fairy Pixie Dust… Starts Rising Up," offering a memorable interlude that's hard to resist.
The flawless delivery impeccably complements the melody, resulting in a seamless marriage of music and lyrics.
There's very little to fault in this song. While it might not clinch the competition, its craftsmanship is evident, a testament to the talents of the writers behind it. With the right well-known singer, it has the potential to become a holiday sing-along staple, post a round of holiday cheers, of course.
Regarding production, I've heard this demo singer's voice over the years, and her melodic interpretations are top-notch. Kudos to the entire production team for their hard work.

An appealing opening riff that echoes throughout the entire song. The driving rhythm creates an energetic blues vibe, and the skilled musicians shine in their performance. At around 1:30, the wah/quack tone adds a cool dimension, followed by the harmonica making it’s entrance at 1:55, though I was hoping it would take a more prominent role and take verse with the melody.
The guitar and harmonica, despite their standout moments, dominated the mix, making it hard to fully appreciate the rest of the arrangement & structural components of the piece. If this were my track, I'd suggest a remix, perhaps experimenting with expanding on the excellent opening motif to maintain listener interest. While production isn't considered in a songwriting competition, enhancing melodies and hooks with a solid production, good mix and arrangements is crucial to success for an instrumental, especially a blues piece. It could significantly alter how the audience perceives the overall track. I love the opening melody, but the arrangement fluttered after about 30 seconds, mainly because of the mix.
Bayou Self
An amazing hook that's incredibly vivid and descriptive, boasting an exceptional concept. The hook's strength begs for an even more robust melody. Impressive lyrics and word rhythm; the more I heard it, the more I valued it.
I think this song has been in the contest for three years now, and this time around, I rated it slightly higher. I've always admired it and believe it's masterfully crafted by a talented songwriter. It keeps gaining depth with every listen.
Regarding the arrangement and as mentioned in previous years, it felt a bit cramped. However, it succeeded in capturing the regional essence intended by the lyrics.
Behind A Wall
Fascinating concept for a song that holds deeper meaning beyond its lyrics, which I always find intriguing. The song's subject navigates a life fraught with challenges, eventually feeling trapped in the world they've built, yearning to overcome their current barriers. Interestingly, the resolution involves aiding a stranger facing similar struggles.
The melody at 33 seconds and throughout is truly exceptional—fantastic work that delivers the most compelling melodic hook in the song. The harmonies certainly didn’t either. They were excellent.
Although "Wide As An Ocean Mountain Tall" feels a bit contrived in the first verse, I do believe the simplicity of all of the lyrics are what makes this song work with the melody. In a way it’s a little early Beatles in it’s simplicity, but a little later Beatles in it’s depth.
Although the melody in the verses might seem somewhat repetitive, it oddly suits the essence of this particular piece. Impressive work from a thought provoking writer.

Were it my track, I'd consider revising the bridge's lyrics. They seem somewhat disjointed from the rest of the song, potentially creating a disconnect for the listener. I'd also consider a gradual intensification in delivering the chorus across the song. Perhaps keeping the melody a touch more subdued in the initial chorus and allowing the raw emotion to shine through in the final rendition.
Overall, a good song and I would love to see the song performed by this singer in a live setting.
