Thanks to judge Roy Elkins for his very detailed comments:
I am always deeply honored to serve as a judge for the annual DSA songwriting
competition. My gratitude for being included in this year's process is immense. It has
indeed been an exceptional year, with the top 11 or 12 entries all showcasing the
potential to take the top prize. Their quality underscores the fierce competition and high
standards within this event.
I listen to each song multiple times, allowing the nuances of each piece to inform my
ever-evolving scores. This iterative process is crucial as it leads to a fair and
comprehensive evaluation of each entry. This year, the winning entry stood out as
perhaps the most engaging and straightforward composition I've encountered in recent
memory—a testament to its undeniable charm and simplicity.
It’s important to remember that my feedback, including any suggestions for
improvement, is intended to be constructive. Most entries are already polished and
present a high level of professionalism and artistic expression. However, in a field where
the lines between good and great blur, the subtleties in craftsmanship can make all the
difference. This year, the challenge was particularly steep, given the outstanding lyrical
quality across the board.
My approach to these reviews is methodical and blind, with no prior knowledge of the
songwriters' identities, ensuring that my evaluations are unbiased and focused solely on
the merit of the music itself.
I do not assess songs based on vocal quality, though it’s important to note that a limited
vocal range can indeed influence the dynamics of the melody line. My comments on
production are intended solely for feedback and play no role in my final judgment of the
songs.
I have employed AI technology to assist with the grammatical precision and more
accurate descriptions of my reviews. I apologize for any delay this year in submitting my
feedback; my aim is always to provide thoughtful and timely critiques and hopefully will
get a better jump on it next year.
Once again, congratulations to the DSA for maintaining its status as a beacon of
excellence in the songwriting community. This organization consistently exemplifies the
pinnacle of creativity and craftsmanship, setting a lofty benchmark for all involved.
Top Songs
First: Song For Tim
This piece begins with a simple and sweet piano melody, immediately drawing the
listener into a nostalgic and emotional world. The transitions into the hook are
seamless, creating a reflective tone that stirs thoughts of bygone days. The melody is
so captivating that at one point, I found myself completely mesmerized, stopping
everything else to simply listen. There may not be another melody in this competition
that fits its genre as perfectly as this one.
While the instrumental lacks lyrics, it conveys an undeniable sense of truth and feeling.
However, it does feel slightly rigid at times, as if the player is following sheet music
rather than letting the music breathe. If it were my song, I would experiment with letting
the tempo and phrasing drift more naturally, adding a touch of spontaneity. Incorporating
jazz chords could also introduce a fresh dimension and bring new textures to the
composition.
That said, this piece moved me deeply. Instrumentals, particularly solo piano pieces,
often face challenges in song contests without the support of lyrics, but this one stands
out by invoking a profound sense of emotion and truth. It’s a genuine and beautifully
crafted work—a true standout in its category.
Second: Second Chances
This song is a beautifully crafted narrative that evokes a deep sense of nostalgia and
explores the bittersweet twists of life. It captures universal emotions, weaving them into
a story that feels both personal and relatable. The opening line, “That girl you loved in
10th grade…red hair…French braids,” immediately transports listeners to a time of
youthful infatuations and fleeting first loves. It’s a vivid image that nearly everyone can
connect with, making the song instantly engaging.
The lyric, “You never get over that self-inflicted wound,” is a poignant reflection on the
mistakes and regrets we carry through life, resonating with listeners on a deeply
emotional level. The hook, “Life is not a one-act play,” is masterfully written, a poetic
and memorable line that anchors the song’s theme of redemption and second chances.
It’s the kind of phrase that sticks with you long after the music fades, capturing the
essence of hope and resilience.
Although the production is polished and professional, I do not consider it when
evaluating a song. With that said, it provides the perfect backdrop for the evocative
lyrics. The melody supports the emotional weight of the song, and the phrasing flows
naturally, allowing the story to unfold with clarity and grace. The balance between the
lyrics and the music is exceptional, ensuring that neither element overpowers the other.
This is a well-crafted and timeless piece, the kind of song that speaks to listeners
across generations. It’s a universal tale of longing, regret, and the possibilities that
come
with second chances. Its relatability and emotional depth make it one
of the strongest contenders, and I found myself returning to it
repeatedly, debating whether it
might be the best in the competition. A brilliant effort, showcasing outstanding
songwriting and production.
Third: Skip Tracer
At first glance, the unusual title “Skip Tracer” might leave listeners like me scratching
their heads. What exactly is a skip tracer? For those unfamiliar, it refers to someone
who tracks down individuals who have gone off the grid, often in a professional or
investigative context. The metaphor of using a skip tracer to "track down a heart" is
clever and unconventional, immediately sparking curiosity. It’s the kind of title that
demands attention, and while it may initially seem nonsensical, the song quickly proves
its worth with repeated listens.
The opening melodic hook sets the tone beautifully, drawing the listener in, and the
melody builds skillfully toward the hook. By the time you reach the line, “Skip tracer to
track down my heart,” you’re completely immersed, humming along, and appreciating
just how infectious the song is. The phrasing in the first two lines feels slightly uneven,
and it’s unclear if this was an intentional stylistic choice or a minor hiccup in delivery.
However, this imperfection adds to the charm, making the track feel raw and genuine.
This song excels in its ability to grow on the listener. While at first, the heavy metaphor
might seem like “too much,” the combination of the lyrics, melody, and hooks wins you
over with each subsequent play. It’s one of those tracks that embeds itself in your mind,
with its creativity and catchy refrain lingering long after the music stops.
“Skip Tracer” stands out as a skillfully crafted and highly original song. It defies initial
expectations and rewards the listener with its depth, cleverness, and infectious energy.
A solid entry that climbed higher on my list with every listen. Brilliant work that surprises
and delights in equal measure!
Production comments:
The gritty vocal performance lends an air of authenticity to the track, perfectly
complementing the narrative. The Theremin-like synth line to this old synth guy is a
delightful surprise, adding a playful, retro touch that elevates the production. It’s a subtle
but impactful detail, bringing a smile to the listener's face and reinforcing the song’s
unique personality. The instrumentation overall is well-balanced, supporting the vocals
without overshadowing them, and the production feels polished yet unpretentious.
Kudos to everyone on this team.
Fourth: Second Time Around
This song opens with a serene and peaceful introduction, immediately drawing the
listener into its gentle and inviting atmosphere. The melody is beautifully constructed,
and the phrasing of the lyrics flows effortlessly, creating a sense of intimacy and
emotional resonance. At 55 seconds and again at 1:47, the transition into the pre-
chorus is particularly striking—sweet, memorable, and expertly timed to maintain the
song’s momentum. These moments feel like emotional peaks, adding layers of depth to
the overall structure.
The highlight of the song is undoubtedly the hook, where the lyric "Second Time
Around" is married perfectly to the melody. It’s the kind of chorus that feels natural yet
impactful, with just the right amount of repetition to make it stick without overdoing it.
The balance between the melody and lyric is impeccable, showcasing masterful
songwriting that feels both heartfelt and polished.
The layout of the song is thoughtfully executed, guiding the listener seamlessly through
its various sections. It’s a stellar example of great songwriting with potential for creative
exploration in future renditions. I found myself eager to know more about the artist
behind this work and to hear what else they have created. Truly an outstanding
piece—congratulations to the creator!
One production suggestion: an acoustic 12-string guitar finger-picking intro could give
the opening an even more delicate, textured feel, setting the tone beautifully.
Additionally, re-imagining this track with a more upbeat tempo, incorporating banjos or a
bluegrass-inspired arrangement, could offer an intriguing variation. Such an approach
could highlight the song’s versatility, making it appealing to an even wider audience.
That said, the current version already shines brightly as is.
Fifth: Alone To Wonder
This piece is an exquisitely written composition with a captivating chord progression that
serves as the backbone of the song. The subtle yet effective use of counter-melodies,
which repeat throughout, adds depth and sophistication to the arrangement. This
layering creates a rich, immersive listening experience, making the track perfect for
upscale dinner or lounge scenes often featured in film and television. It’s the kind of
track that effortlessly sets a mood without overpowering the listener—a hallmark of
great music for visual media.
The song has immediate licensing potential, as it fits a niche that is consistently in
demand for film and TV placements. Restaurant or lounge scenes, in particular, almost
always require tracks like this to subtly enhance the ambiance, and this piece is an ideal
candidate for such scenarios. It’s polished, versatile, and achieves its purpose with
finesse.
The saxophone performance is a standout element, showcasing a skilled player with a
strong sense of melody. However, incorporating more dynamic phrasing—peaks,
valleys, and subtle emotional shifts—could elevate the piece even further. A saxophone
lead
that ebbs and flows would add a narrative quality to the composition.
That said, one must also consider the context for which the piece is
intended. While a more
expressive sax line could make for a stronger standalone track, it might compete with
dialogue in a broadcast setting, so balance is key of that is the intention of this piece.
As it stands, this composition is enchanting and holds significant value, whether as an
addition to a music library or as a featured piece in a cinematic or television moment. It’s
the kind of track you could listen to repeatedly, appreciating the craftsmanship behind its
understated elegance. This is fantastic work, both musically and
conceptually—congratulations on creating such a refined and purpose-driven piece.
Mentions in order of scoring:
Love Of A Good Man
This song delivers an instantly recognizable and incredibly memorable hook—one that
gives listeners the delightful sense of déjà vu, as if they’ve known it forever. That kind of
familiarity is a hallmark of great songwriting and ensures its broad appeal. It’s the kind
of song that feels effortlessly timeless, blending relatable themes with a hook that stays
with you long after the first listen.
The progression is solid throughout, creating a strong foundation that supports the
melody and lyrics beautifully. The instrumental break at 2:26 is a standout moment,
offering a brief but effective pause before pulling the listener back into the song. This
break gives the track a dynamic lift, adding variety and keeping the listener engaged.
However, the hook could make an even greater impact if introduced earlier in the song
or repeated more frequently. By weaving it in sooner, the track could capitalize on its
strongest element, ensuring that it grabs the listener from the start and doesn’t let go.
This track feels tailor-made for powerhouse country artists like Carrie Underwood,
Miranda Lambert, or Carly Pearce. It’s perfectly aligned with the style and emotional
resonance these artists are known for, making it highly marketable to both fans and
industry professionals. The narrative, melody, and production are all in the sweet spot
for modern country music, and it’s easy to imagine any of these stars embracing it
wholeheartedly.
Overall, this is a standout song with immense potential. Its combination of a familiar yet
fresh hook and versatile appeal makes it a contender not just for radio play but for long-
term success. With a few small adjustments to the structure—like emphasizing the hook
earlier—this could easily become a chart-topping hit. A truly impressive effort and a
song that deserves to be heard far and wide. Really good writers at work here.
Production comments
The track is polished, radio-ready, and possesses the professional sheen required for
mainstream success. Great work to the producer.
I Knew Her When She Wasn’t All That
The song's concept is fresh, and its delivery is highly effective, making it a standout
piece. This song boasts a clever and refreshing hook, “She Wasn’t All That,” which is
both unique and instantly memorable. The hook ties the lyrics and melody together
beautifully, creating a seamless marriage that captures the listener’s attention and holds
it throughout. It’s the kind of phrase that feels both fresh and familiar, making it easy to
connect with while standing out as original and creative.
The storytelling is engaging, unfolding a relatable narrative about seeing someone’s
transformation over time and realizing their true worth. Lines like “She was a nerdy
teen” add an endearing and personal touch, giving the listener a vivid picture of the
character’s growth. The resolution is particularly satisfying, as the writer ultimately ends
up with her—a conclusion that ties the song together in a heartfelt and uplifting way.
That said, some of the lyrics in the verses feel slightly forced in their alignment with the
melody. For instance, “pigtails and freckles” in the opening line and “turn heads” in the
chorus don’t flow as naturally as other parts of the song. A bit of tweaking here could
make the verses as smooth and polished as the chorus. Despite these minor moments,
the overall structure and progression of the song work well, keeping the listener
engaged and invested in the story.
With a little refinement in the phrasing of a few lines, this track has the potential to be a
hit. It’s clever, relatable, and charming—everything a great song should be. A fantastic
effort with storytelling at its core!
You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know
This song explores a thought-provoking and unique theme, “You Don’t Know What You
Don’t Know,” presented with a strikingly simple yet effective melody. The melody is
simple with an understated charm, allowing the message of the song to take center
stage while still maintaining a distinctive musical identity. This simplicity, combined with
its emotional depth, creates a piece that feels both accessible and profound. Non-
vocalists could sing-along with this.
Overall, the composition itself is so well-crafted that it could easily transition into a
compelling instrumental. Stripping away the lyrics would not diminish its impact; instead,
it could highlight the beauty of the melody and allow it to stand alone as a purely
musical piece. This versatility adds another layer of appeal, making the song suitable for
a wide range of interpretations, from a vocal-driven performance to a standalone
instrumental track.
Whether performed with vocals or re-imagined as an instrumental, this track has the
potential to leave a lasting impression on its listeners. Very good lyric and hook and I’m
sure this was crafted by a seasoned writer. A truly impressive effort that showcases the
power of subtlety in songwriting.
The High Pasture
This song is a beautiful love story centered around the memorable title and hook, “The
High Pasture.” The narrative follows the writer and his love, who shares with him that
when she passes, he will find her in The High Pasture. The poignant line, “It isn’t
heaven… but a whole lot closer to God,” captures the depth of their connection and
adds a spiritual resonance that lingers.
The imagery is vivid and cinematic, with lines like “10,000 acres…” evoking a vast and
emotional landscape that reflects their bond. While the phrase “10,000 acres” is
impactful, it feels slightly forced; perhaps “thousands of acres” might flow more naturally.
Even so, the story’s themes of love, loss, and faith are deeply compelling, making this
song more than just a tale—it’s a heartfelt tribute to enduring love.
The hook and title are strikingly original, standing out as one of the most memorable in
recent memory. It blends timeless storytelling with a fresh perspective, creating a
balance that feels both innovative and familiar. At one point in my listening process, this
song topped my list, a testament to its emotional power and artistry.
Celebrity
A witty critique of fame and its fleeting nature, this song features clever lyrics that stick
with the listener. Slightly increasing the tempo might give it more energy, but the writing
is strong, and the hook is engaging. With further refinement, this could be a hit. It
reminded me a little of a Robbie Williams with the same concept, but unique in it’s own
right. I love this style of writing. Great work.
Stand Tall
This track boasts a strong groove and a defiant chorus that inspires resilience. While
certain phrases like “that red dress” could be polished for smoother delivery, the key
changes are tasteful and the melody shine throughout the song. A solid song with room
for lots if interpretations. Good song.
1111
This track grows with each listen, revealing its depth and originality. Though it initially
lacks a clear lyrical hook, its poignant and opinionated lyrics resonate strongly. While
the title is interesting, a change could boost its visibility, ensuring it is found in a search
and receives the attention it deserves.
Other entrants in alphabetical order:
Blood of My Son
Dark and haunting, this track delivers an original production style, though the lyrics lack
depth. Refining the lyricism could elevate its impact significantly as the track without the
lyric is very strong.
Breathless
An energetic dance track that exudes timeless appeal. While the hook struggles to
stand out, the instrumental sections are vibrant and engaging.
Common Thread
The melody and lyrics are individually strong but don’t quite align. If this were my song, I
might explore alternative pairings that could result in a stronger, more cohesive piece.
I’ve had a few like this over the years and testing the lyric against a different melody
might bring out the diamond in the rough.
Devil Rail
While the melody is repetitive, it grows with the lyric, creating a meditative effect. Slight
lyrical revisions could elevate it further.
Dodged a Bullet
The extended talking intro, lasting 33 seconds before the song begins, feels a bit
lengthy—I’d suggest cutting it and starting directly at 40 seconds for better pacing. The
singer's interpretation suggests a deep personal connection to the song, likely indicating
they are also the writer. This adds a raw, emotional quality to the performance, but it
also leaves room for refinement in the delivery. While the lyrics and melody are strong,
they could benefit from some fine-tuning to maximize their potential. The authenticity of
the song is undeniable, and with a few adjustments to align the "truth" of the narrative
with the musical structure, it has the potential to truly shine. A few tweaks could elevate
this from good to great
The Door To Your Dreams
The track begins with a playful melody, yet some of the lyrics come across as slightly
predictable. The melody is really appealing, and the lyrics are good but just shy of being
exceptional. It’s the kind of song that might divide opinions among listeners like myself.
With a more compelling narrative, it has the potential to be a standout
Fabulous Flying Machine
An intriguing concept with thought-provoking lyrics, such as “I’ll buy some more guns,
keep us free, are we free?” Though the lyric could be revisited for a stronger connection
to the hook. This is a good track as is, but has immense potential with further
refinement. I have a sense that a really good writer wrote this and probably has many
more songs in their arsenal.
First Trip To Church
A refreshing and unique approach to a spiritual theme. The originality of the lyrics
stands out, making it a compelling listen. It is a humorous approach to recruiting future
believers. I always enjoy it when a writer creates a different to send their message.
Inspirational.
Fool Against Nature
A jazzy track with an excellent melody and strong backup vocals. The hook is well-
crafted, and the melody at 1:45 is particularly captivating. A delightful piece for jazz
enthusiasts. I love the feel and style of this and could listen all day.
Fun In Heaven
A lively New Orleans-inspired track with a rhythm that grows tighter as the song
progresses. The natural progression of the melody feels intentional and works well as
is. It is interesting to listen to this many times as one hears more detail each time
through. Good work on this.
Goodbye
A strong melody anchors this piece, though the lyrics could use some refinement. The
resolution on “Say Goodbye” is satisfying, adding emotional weight and married well
with the melody at that point.
The Growing Years
A touching and reflective piece, reminiscent of classics like “Cat’s in the Cradle.” The
hook resolves beautifully, though some lines feel the lyrics may be slightly forced.
Overall, it’s a mesmerizing song that leaves the listener longing for more. Production
note: Excellent job and kudos to all involved.
I Can’t Rhyme
A clever and original concept executed with near-perfect delivery. While the bridge
doesn’t match the strength of the verses, the overall composition is memorable and
engaging. Very good work.
Jagged Memories
The title alone is evocative, and the lyric “memories I can’t leave alone” is poignant. This
song is hauntingly beautiful, with excellent potential.
Love Is Real
This song’s chord progression and climb into the hook are impressive. Maybe the best
in the competition. I’m not sure the title and hook are as original as the melody and
progression, as “Love Is Real” hook has been done so many times,. That being said,
kudos to everyone on this project. Fantastic production.
My Own Way
A soulful and passionate delivery makes this song stand out. Its emotional depth
resonates deeply with the listener. A little broader melody might take this to a whole new
level.
Wedding Party
A well-crafted rhyme scheme highlights the hook, the overall concept is strong and
enjoyable. Though certain lines feel a bit like the writers “worked them in,” it is good
work and fund to listen to.
A gentle dulcimer-like hook anchors this song, supporting the simple yet compelling
melodies. A beautiful track with a timeless quality.
Thanks again to everyone at DSA and for what you do for songwriters.
